Young students face various issues every day, and may make the wrong choices due to peer pressure or vulnerability. Due to this, there is a need for directional counseling that helps strengthen their interpersonal skills, and the ability to make sensible choices in day to day situations.
Life orientation has been made a part of the school curriculum to teach students about decision-making, goal-setting and problem-solving.
It can help in developing and enhancing the psychological, personal, physical moral, cultural, socio-economic and neuro-cognitive areas of students.
The various subjects that are addressed in Life Orientation sessions include peer pressure, rights, relationships, communication, diet, personal care, culture, career choices, pregnancy, drugs, sex, alcohol, and HIV, to name a few. Some of these topics, such as prevention of HIV/AIDS are extremely important as there are no vaccines or cures, and it may have unchangeable effects on their lives.
